How to Waterproof a Sheepskin Coat
A sheepskin coat is not a plastic mac - it cannot
be made waterproof. All coats will eventually wet. However, the
lower resistance of all sheepskin coats can be significantly improved
by application of a fluorochemical spray. Two well known examples
are "Scotchguard" made by Punch Sales and "Swadeguard"
made by Orkin Ltd. Both are available from most department stores.
Follow the procedures on the aerosol can and spray in a well ventilated
room.
Where Sheepskin Coats can be Cleaned
The Association of British Laundry, Cleaning
and Rental Services Ltd (ABLCRS) have a list of specialist leathercleaners.
There is the additional advantage that all members abide by the
Code of Practice, which includes procedures in the event of complaint.
Some members operate a mail order service.
In general, do not send your garment to be cleaned
for "freshening up", or for an isolated stain or mark,
early in the life of the garment. Equally, do not leave it until
so heavily soiled that very drastic measures have to be taken to
get the garment clean.
Alterations and Repairs
Some, but not all, ABLCRS members do repairs,
but remember there are limitations to the matching of suede and
wool character on sheepskins.
Removal of Stains
Spraying with a fluorochemical also gives resistance
to oil. Ingrained oil or stains cannot be removed and prevention
is much better than cure. Light, greasy soiling can usually be removed
by a rubberised cloth such as Swadegroom'.
Brushing and Application of Skin Guards
A gentle brush at weekly intervals is desirable
but not essential.
If garment gets wetted, brush gently whilst
wet to raise nap, air dry gently and re-brush when dry. This is
very desirable to maintain nap.
If areas become shiny, use 'Swadegroom' or similar
products to remove soiling, but more drastic brushing may be required.
Stop if a long hairy nap is being produced and consider whether
general cleaning is now necessary.
Points to Consider when Buying Sheepskin Coats
- Wear all the clothes you would normally expect
to wear in winter.
- Make sure that the garment is a generous
fit.
- Do not expect the garment to stretch in wear.
It may do so, but do not rely on it, any stretch in wear will
certainly be lost again in dry cleaning.
