Chrome tanning was
developed in the latter half of the nineteenth century after it
was found that the salts of various metals could combine with
skin protein to make leather. The chrome used in chrome tanning
is in the form of chromium sulphate.
Chrome tanning was
first patented in the United States by Augustus Schultz in 1884.
Other mineral tannages
include Alum
and zirconium.
